The February edition of the Rwanda National Ranking Championship got underway today at Cercle Sportif de Kigali, with top-ranked players eyeing crucial points and coveted wildcards entry into next week’s ATP Challenger event.
As expected, the top seeds showed their dominance in the opening round, all securing their spots in the Round of 16 without major upsets.
Current No. 1, Claude ISHIMWE, enters this edition with extra motivation, knowing that another loss to his rival Etienne NIYIGENA—who defeated him in last month’s final—would significantly close the ranking gap between the two, with Etienne closely trailing ISHIMWE at No. 2.
Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Joshua MUHIRE remains in contention, looking to close in on the top two with a strong performance this month. Further down the rankings, the battle for the No. 4 spot is heating up, as David M. RWAMUCYO—currently ranked fifth—sets his sights on overtaking Brian H. KARENZI and breaking into the top four.
With high-stakes matches ahead and wildcard spots on the line, the tournament promises thrilling action in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates as Rwanda’s best battle it out on court!
