Etienne NIYIGENA

The January Edition of the Rwanda National Championship wrapped up today after four days of intense competition, delivering high-quality tennis and setting the tone for the upcoming season.

In a dramatic final, Etienne Niyigena staged a stunning comeback to defeat Ishimwe Claude in three thrilling sets. After dropping the first set 5-7, Niyigena fought back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-3, clinching the title in style. Despite the loss, Ishimwe remains the top-ranked player, though Niyigena has now closed the gap in the standings.

Earlier in the tournament, Ishimwe dominated David Manzi in the semifinals, winning 6-2, 6-2, while Niyigena overcame third-ranked Joshua Muhire with a commanding 6-0, 6-4 victory.

The Doubles Final was equally electrifying, as Ishimwe Claude and Etienne Niyigena teamed up to defeat Brian Karenzi Hirwa and Manishimwe Emmanuel in a hard-fought battle. Brian and his partner showed great resilience, saving three match points before ultimately succumbing to defeat.

This edition also marked the beginning of a sponsorship partnership with Mchezo, a significant boost for the tournament and Rwandan tennis as a whole.

Looking ahead, the February Edition, set to begin on February 13, just a week before the ATP Challenger, will be crucial for top players aiming to solidify their rankings. With a potential wild card entry into the ATP Challenger on the line, the stakes will be even higher.

As the tournament concludes, Ishimwe Claude retains the No. 1 ranking, followed by Niyigena in second place, while Brian Karenzi Hirwa and Rwamucyo Manzi David sit in fourth and fifth, respectively.

With momentum building and competition intensifying, next month’s edition promises another thrilling showdown among Rwanda’s best tennis players.
